Graceland offers a wide variety of courses throughout the year in both online and face-to-face formats.

Classroom Management with Harry and Rosemary Wong

Harry and Rosemary Wong are the authors of The First Days of School. This is the preeminent book on classroom management and lesson mastery. The book walks a teacher, either novice or veteran, through the most effective ways to begin a school year and continue to become an effective teacher. This is a fundamental book on how to teach, with over three million copies havingĀ been sold.

Courses with Russ Pieken

Russ Pieken is a nationally known consultant in the area of classroom effectiveness. He has been a classroom teacher and a principal in both the Independence, Missouri School District and the Blue Valley School District. Most recently he received a special recognition for his work with the Missouri Department of Education on "Project Success," where he served as a mentor to Missouri middle and high schools in a statewide effort to improve student proficiency in communication arts and mathematics. The school that Russ mentored won the award for most improved of all 25 participating schools.

A variety of classes including Five Kinds of Minds for the 21st Century, The Social Lives of Children Today, Emotional Intelligence and Boys in Today's Culture are offered at various times during the year. Depending upon the course, the format may be online or face-to-face.

Science Safety in Academic Settings

Graceland University has teamed up with JaKel, the preeminent name in science education safety since 1986, to provide an online course that is a must for teachers concerned about safety in their classroom. This nine-week online course covers the following:

  • The 15 recommended science safety steps
  • Application of safety information to actual practice
  • Appropriate safety equipment
  • National and state specific laws, codes and standards
  • Analysis of court cases

Participants will review published research and report it for class analysis and discussion, conduct actual safety audits, design a "safe" science lab and develop a safety program for their facility.
