Cedar Falls, IA-The Indoor track team was back on the road again Friday and Saturday competing in the University of Northern Iowa Indoor Meet. As has been the case for most of the season, Graceland had an outstanding showing keeping pace with many of the NCAA Division I programs that were in attendance.
Sophomore Neil Grundman (Croswell, MI) continued his great season with a time of 8:36.89 in the 3000m which also placed him first in the competition. His time breaks the previous school record of 8:46.59 set by Andrew Easdale back in 2001. Neil's time is a personal best by almost 12 seconds. Also, his performance makes him a 3000m run automatic national qualifier. Neil has now qualified for the national meet in both the 3000 meter run and the 5000 meter run. Other notables on the men's side were freshman Jeroyal Lewis finishing 7th in the long jump and Ben Brummit (Unionville, MO) finishing 9th in the heptathalon. Brummit qualified individually for the NAIA National Indoor meet in both the high jump and the heptathalon with his performance.
On the women's side Mwale Kapande had a busy day doing the long jump, 60m dash, 400meters, and the 200m dash. She started her day in the long jump just short of qualifying for the National Meet with a jump of 5.28 meters, needing 5.30m to qualify. Her performance placed her 5th overall and was only beaten by NCAA D1 athletes. She also she ran a season best in the 60m dash at 8.18 as well as the 400m dash with a 64.88. She ended her day on a great note by running the 200m dash in 26.99 which just came up short of the 200m dash qualifying standard by .66 hundredths of a seconds. Her time placed her 10th overall out of 45 athletes.
The men's and women's indoor track teams will hit the road again this weekend participating in the Cornell College Hilltop Invitational. Stay tuned to the Jacket athletics website for continuing coverage on the men's and women's indoor teams and all of Jacket athletics.
