Edwardsville, IL-Eight members from the men's and women's track teams wrapped up the national meet in Illinois on Saturday.
This years participants were led by senior Ben Brummit (Unionville, MO) who participated in the decathlon where he came in ranked #7 nationally. Brummit had the best showing of any of the Jackets at the national meet finishing 6th overall scoring 6492 points. Brummit was named All-American for his performance. Sophomore long distance star Neil Grundman (Croswell, MI). qualified in the 1500 meter, the 5000 meter and the 10,000 meter runs but chose only to participate in the 5000 meter. Unfortunately he was unable to finish the race due to a groin injury. Alex Stewart (Aurora, Ontario) threw the javelin 57.21 meters (a personal best) but was unable to advance to the finals and James Thomas (Orlando, FL) ran the 100 meter dash finishing fifth in his heat with a time of 11.10 seconds
On the women's side, four qualifed. The 4 x 100 team of Keneisha Ellis (Shawnee, KS), Mariah Willis (Kansas City, MO), Mwale Kapande (Mt. Pleasant, IA) and Quannika Horne (Lansing, MI) finished sixth in their heat with a time of 49.26 which was their best time on the season. Kapande and Horne also competed in the long jump Horne jumping 5.47 meters and Kapande jumping 5.76 meters winning her flight and finishing an outstanding 7th overall. The jump was also Kapande's career best.
"Everyone that competed proved that they deserved to be at the national meet," stated Coach Allshouse following the meet. "Virtually everyone proved to be at peak form for the biggest meet of the year as most put forth their best performance of the year at the national championship. I cannot begin to express how exceptionally proud I am of all the qualifiers this year. They handled themselves with class and dignity on and off the track and I am truly sad to see the season come to an end," finished Allshouse.
