Chicago-IL-The Graceland women's soccer team defeated Saint Xavier today 2-1, improving to 2-0-2 on the '09 campaign.
The Jackets' female footballers prevailed in a gutsy performance against the Cougars (3-3-0), who could not penetrate the dauntless Graceland defense.
After a scoreless first half, GU's Chelsea Phillips (Grenada Hills, CA) managed to break in the scoreboard in the 52nd minute from 20 feet. The Graceland combination attack came off an assist from sophomore forward Katrina Vega (Asuncion, Paraguay) and started a run of scoring in what was otherwise a fantastic defensive contest. Saint Xavier responded with a goal eight minutes later, but the score was to be their only shot on goal in the second period as the Graceland defense responded by putting a near-vacuum seal on their backfield.
Junior Phillips broke the short stalemate just three minutes later with another goal to put Graceland up 2-1. The Cougars could not make any progress in the remaining twenty-seven minutes against a resolute Jacket backfield.
"We started out with a nice combo with [Chelsea] Phillips and [Katrina] Vega," said Coach Fred Wagenaar, "and after they tied it, Graceland showed real character once again and came back, when Chelsea calmly put in goal number two," he added with praise.
The Graceland women, on their first of two games in the Windy City, play Robert Morris tomorrow in what is sure to be a fine contest. Stay tuned to the Jacket athletics website for continuing coverage of the women's soccer team and all of Jacket athletics.
