Canton, MO-The Graceland women's soccer team defeated Culver Stockton Friday in an explosion of offense. The Wildcats, who fall to 3-5 on the season, were unable to keep up with a punishing Jacket offense which became ever more effective as the game progressed.
Gisela Arrieta (Valledupar, Colombia) kicked off the GU attack with an unassisted goal in the 10th minute. Led by junior Chelsea Phillips (Granada Hills, CA), the Graceland offense had the Jackets up 3-0 at the break. Phillips started her fantastic afternoon early with a goal in the 27th minute on the assist by Karina Vega (Asuncion, Paraguay). The GU women came out shooting in the second half, overwhelming the Culver-Stockton side's defense with shot after shot and making their backfield scrape and work the entire period.
Graceland put 18 shots on goal in the contest to Culver-Stockton's one, and shot 16 times in the second half for 29 total shots in the game.
The last ten minutes of the final period saw a last quick burst of scoring, with the eighth and last Graceland goal coming in the 87th minute of play. Chelsea Phillips added two more goals for the hat trick, while Arrieta and Vega both put in two of their own in addition to having two assists each. Rounding out the Graceland offensive output was Shay Eskridge (Rowlett, TX) with one goal.
The Jacket defense remained ironclad all game, allowing the Graceland strikers to focus on their offensive attack. Freshman keeper Danielle Butler pitched a shutout, stopping the only shot on her net for the afternoon.
"Today's game was truly an all-around team effort, with 18 players getting 20-25 minutes," said Coach Fred Wagenaar. "It's always great to get the first conference win under your belt. The team passed effectively and it was nice to see the offense meshing so well," he added.
Graceland (6-1-2) plays Missouri Valley in Marshall, Missouri on Saturday, October 3rd. That game will kick off at 1:00pm. Stay tuned to the Jacket athletics website for continuing coverage of the women's soccer team and all of Jacket athletics.
