Lamoni, IA-The #14 Graceland women (8-1-2) defeat conference rival #24 William Jewell (8-3-1) by a score of 2-0 at Rasmussen Field in Lamoni. The Jackets were able to hold the Cardinal offense at bay for the evening while capitalizing on their own opportunities against a very solid Jewell side.
Junior defender Kristen Johnson (Sault Ste. Marie, ON) put GU on the board on a bizarre yet effective strike in the twentieth minute for her first career score. Ten minutes later, Gisela Arrieta (Valledupar, Colombia) found the Cardinal net for a second Graceland score to run the score to 2-0.
The Jackets would hold onto that lead with an iron grip for the rest of the contest, with the defense limiting Jewell to four shots on goal in the second period. Senior keeper Leslie Danner (Raytown, MO) had six saves and kept the Cardinals out of the net despite a few dangerous Jewell forays into the Graceland backfield.
"Tonight's game was a very important win for Graceland," said Coach Fred Wagenaar, "because it puts us right back on the path back up the rating ladder. Jewell is always a competitive team in the HAAC, and if you beat them, you usually have a good change at the title."
The Jackets, now 3-0-0 in conference games, will next play on Thursday, October 8th, when they travel to Fayette, Missouri to face Central Methodist University. That game will kick off at 5:00 pm. Graceland's Homecoming festivities this weekend will see Graceland take on St. Mary's College at Rasmussen Field in Lamoni, with the game starting at 5:00 pm, Saturday, October 10th.
