Lamoni, IA-The Graceland women defeated the Eagles of Avila College at Rasmussen Field in Lamoni by a score of 2-0. The #12 Jackets (10-1-2) put a goal in during each period and with their usual stout defense prevented the Eagles from denting the scoreboard.
Junior forward Chelsea Phillips (Granada Hills, CA) opened the scoring with a wonderful shot in the 34th minute off the assist by Gisela Arrieta (Valledupar, Colombia). Graceland took 14 shots in the first period, with 3 of those on goal, including the Phillips score.
Graceland came out firing after half time and put up a second goal, also from Phillips, within six minutes of the period's start. Two points was all the Jackets would need, and the steel-trap backfield held Avila to two shots on goal for the second half. Senior keeper Leslie Danner (Raytown, MO) was only required to make four saves on the evening as the Graceland side was able to keep the Eagles away from their area.
"We didn't necessarily play our best game tonight, but you aren't always going to," said Coach Fred Wagenaar. "We still found a way to win, and we came back out after a rough first half and played better in the second. The ladies showed the ability to make adjustments at halftime and refocus," he continued, adding "We have a week until the next game, but we'll be excited and ready for MidAmerica here in Lamoni."
As Coach Wagenaar said, Graceland will next take on MidAmerica Nazarene University at Rasmussen Field in Lamoni on Saturday, October 24. Stay tuned to the Graceland athletic website for continuing coverage of women's soccer and all Graceland athletics.
