Leavenworth, KS-Monday evening in Leavenworth, Kansas, the Yellowjacket men's basketball team took a big step in the right direction. Facing #25 University of St. Mary's, Graceland got their first win over a ranked team in quite some time. The Jackets defeated the Spires, 64-60.
Coming off of a disappointing yet promising loss Saturday to ranked William Penn Univeristy, the Jackets had high hopes for both today and for the entire upcoming season. Backed by strong performances from 3rd team all-HAAC player Jewel Carter (Kansas City, KS) and newcomer Tyler Raasch (Bridgewater, IA) Graceland was able to pull off the tough road win. Carter finished the game with a team leading 19 points and Raasch finished with 10. The tale of the victory came from the freethrow line however. GU shot more freethrows than their opponents attempted converting on 29-41 from the charity stripe in the win.
"It was great for us to come out of that place with a win," stated Coach Hamilton following the Jacket victory. "It was a packed house, the crowd was very loud and it was a very hostile environment. I feel good about the way the guys responded to it though. It feels great to get that first win of the season," continued Hamilton. "We've got high expectations for the year but this was a great start. This is a great group of guys and I can promise you they'll compete and give 100% every night. We'll begin preparation immediately now for Hannibal LaGrange on Saturday," finished Coach Hamilton.
The Jackets are now 1-1 overall and will face Hannibal LaGrange College in Hannibal, Missouri this Saturday at 7:00 pm. Stay tuned to the Jacket athletics website for continuing coverage of the men's basketball team and all of Jacket athletics.
