Lamoni, IA-After coasting Saturday afternoon in their opener in Lamoni, the women's basketball team was tested Tuesday. Facing Ashford University of Clinton, Iowa, the Jackets played a back and forth contest with the Saints before eventually pulling out the 81-75 win.
After both teams played even for the first 15 minutes of the first half, Graceland went on a nice spurt to the end the stanza and went into the locker room with a 10 point lead at 42-32. In the second half however, Ashford would tighten down the defense outscoring GU, but the Jackets strong first half was enough to push them over the edge in the 6 point win.
The Lady Jackets were paced by Alexis Wright (Wichita, KS) who scored a team high 18 points. Wright was one of four Jackets who scored in double figures in the contest. Marissa Rauss (Mansfield, TX) added 15, Channel Rainey (Los Angeles, CA) had 11 and Keturah Spotwood (Tulsa, OK) recorded a double-double scoring 13 points and snaring 11 rebounds.
"It was good for us to be challenged in a game like tonight's," stated Coach Butler after the victory. "We had a nice lead at halftime but had to face a little adversity in the second half. Still, the ladies stayed strong and finished off the game. Friday we'll have to continue to play better as we'll face a very quality opponent in Waldorf," finished Butler.
The Jackets will next face Waldorf College in Lamoni, this Friday night at 6pm. Stay tuned to the Jacket athletics website for continuing coverage of the women's basketball team and all of Jacket athletics.
