Lamoni, IA-The women's soccer team was in Baldwin City, Kansas Tuesday evening looking to close out their regular season with a win. Graceland got a very strong game from both their back line and senior, star goalie Leslie Danner (Raytown, MO). The Jackets shut down the Wildcats for a 2-0 victory.
GU started the scoring midway first half after Danner made an amazing save to keep the game scoreless. Karina Vega (Asuncion, Paraguay) scored in the 25th minute on a beautiful corner kick from Shay Eskridge (Rowlett, TX). Vega was able to head the ball in giving Graceland the 1-0 first half lead.
The Jackets would get their second goal at the midway point in the second half as Gisella Arietta (Valledupar, Colombia) drilled one into the upper 90 on a beautiful free kick just outside the 18 box. The goal was enough to solidify the 2-0 win.
"We finished the regular season with a flourish tonight getting our first goal on a beautiful corner from Shea and Karina finished with the header," stated Coach Wagenaar. "Tonight's win was a capstone to a fantastic regular season and I'm so proud we went 9-0 in conference play. Our defensive play has been strong all year long as we only gave up two goals in conference play. Now we're excited for a strong post season run," finished Wagenaar.
The Jackets finish the regular season ranked 9th nationally and with a record of 15-1-2 overall and 9-0 in Heart of America Athletic Conference play. Graceland will next play in Lamoni next Thursday in the conference tournament as the Jackets have earned the #1 seed and our set to host throughout. Game time and opponent for the tournament is yet to be announced and will be released later in the week.
