LAMONI, IOWA (November 20, 2012)—Four great bands from Graceland University and Lamoni High School will team up Tuesday, December 4, at 7:30 p.m. for the second annual Celebration of Music Concert in the high school gymnasium. The concert is free and open to the public.
71 musicians will perform together in three separate numbers, according to GU Director of Bands Frank Perez. The Graceland Symphonic Band and Jazz Band and the Lamoni High School Concert Band and Jazz Band will perform together on several numbers and separately, playing a wide variety of music, ranging from holiday favorites to ethnic pieces to jazz from the 1920s-30s and selections of music from favorite films.
Perez noted that Graceland music students spend many hours each semester mentoring Lamoni school musicians. “This is community collaboration at its best,” Perez said. He and Ms. Shaw, Lamoni Schools’ Music Director, will take turns guest conducting each other’s bands. Ms. Shaw also plays clarinet in the Graceland Symphonic Band.
The annual concert alternates venues each year. Next year’s concert will be held at the Shaw Center at Graceland University.
