Charlie Conway, PhD, began his academic career at Graceland and will share with students on April 27, 2025.
Graceland University is proud to announce that Charlie Conway, PhD, a pioneering neuroscientist who began his academic journey at Graceland in 1980, will serve as the keynote speaker for the university’s 2025 Commencement Ceremony, held Sunday, April 27, 2025, in Morden Center.
Dr. Conway is a retired Chief Scientific Officer of Biohaven Pharmaceuticals Inc. and Pfizer Inc., where he played a leading role in developing and launching two innovative treatments for migraine—one of the most prevalent and debilitating neurological conditions worldwide. His groundbreaking work contributed directly to the creation of Nurtec® ODT and Zavzpret®, two FDA-approved medications that are transforming the lives of people living with migraine.
A native of the Midwest, Dr. Conway started out as a psychology major at Graceland University. During his time on campus, he took his first coding class (happily admits to being a tech geek) and was active in choir, theater and intramural sports—building a passion for volleyball that he still carries with him today. His path from Graceland to global impact is a powerful example of the transformative potential of a liberal arts education.
“Dr. Conway’s career is a testament to the power of curiosity, compassion, and persistence,” said Graceland President Joel Shrock, PhD. “We are honored to welcome him back to the university where his journey began. His story will no doubt inspire our graduates as they prepare to step into the world and make their own mark.”
Throughout his 30-year research career, Dr. Conway has published extensively in the field of migraine, played a pivotal role in multiple neuroscience programs, and is an inventor on more than a dozen patents related to migraine and pain relief. His work in migraine has helped millions of people reclaim days once lost to suffering and debilitation and set a new standard in pharmaceutical innovation with Nurtec® ODT — the one and only medicine approved to both treat and prevent migraine attacks.
“I’m deeply honored to return to Graceland and speak to the next generation of leaders and changemakers,” said Dr. Conway. “Graceland helped shape my belief that science can be a force for good—and that meaningful impact starts with a sense of purpose and a willingness to explore.”
Dr. Conway will be introduced at commencement by longtime Graceland friend and fellow alumnus Dr. Mike Wiley, Chair of Graceland’s Board of Trustees.
Graceland’s 2025 Commencement Ceremony will take place on April 27, 2025, in Morden Center celebrating the achievements of students across a wide range of disciplines. Dr. Conway’s presence not only highlights the university’s legacy of alumni achievement, but also reinforces Graceland’s continued commitment to innovation, healthcare leadership, and student success.
