“Chanticleer,” an all-male ensemble of a dozen singers, is coming to Shaw Center at Graceland University in Lamoni, Iowa, on Monday evening, Feb. 29, at 7:30 p.m. Tickets for adults are only $10, a real bargain compared with the $25-$50 you would pay at most other locations. However, for those 18 and under, admission is FREE. Yes, students enter FREE! Bring the whole family for an evening of outstanding music for less than the cost of a family night at the movies. (Sorry, no popcorn.)
Founded four decades ago, Chanticleer has produced an amazing 46 CDs. In 2000, the group won the Grammy for Best Small Ensemble Performance for its “Colors of Love” recording. The ensemble was named the 2008 Ensemble of the Year by Musical America, and, in 2009, they were inducted into the American Classical Music Hall of Fame in Cincinnati, Ohio. Chanticleer sings vocal works representing some of the best music from the past 500 years including jazz, gospel and popular selections.
Their name comes from a story from the Middle Ages about the rooster Chanticleer, known for his beautiful voice. His pride leads to his capture by a flattering fox, but in some accounts, Chanticleer turns the table and escapes his captor.
Students will be admitted free at the door. To purchase adult tickets, call 641-784-5296 or order online here. You can also stop by the Shaw Ticket Office Monday-Friday from 9 to noon or 1 to 4 p.m. On the night of the concert, the ticket office will open at 6 p.m.
