Graceland University Assistant Professor of Spanish Jonathan Montalvo, PhD, presented a paper at the 2018 Puerto Rican Studies Association Biennial Conference, Navigating Insecurity: Crisis, Power, and Protest in Puerto Rican Communities, held at Rutgers, the State University of New Jersey Oct. 26-28. The title of the panel was “Reimagining the Nation in Crisis: Sexual, Gender, and Diasporic Identities.” Montalvo’s contribution focused on how the characterization of historically marginalized subjectivities, particularly LGBTQ+ people, in contemporary Puerto Rican literature shed light on the shifts in national and cultural identity of the Puerto Rican people in the midst of the political, economic and natural disaster crisis the island faces.
