Sport Management professor Sehwan Kim scores two new action-packed publications.
For Sehwan Kim, PhD, Assistant Professor at the C.H. Sandage School of Business, it’s an essential combined exercise: furthering the academic study of sports and equipping his students with the business skills to successfully compete in the field of sport management.
“I am proud to support our students’ growth and development, and delighted to contribute to Graceland University’s supportive learning community,” he says. “By offering students hands-on experiences, I am also able to expand my research and professional growth, making Graceland a truly fulfilling place to work.”
An updated second edition of the Encyclopedia of Sport Management that is set to be published in September includes an article by Kim. Bringing together preeminent international researchers, emerging scholars and practitioners, the encyclopedia is an authoritative reference work. In their entry on Alternative Sports, Kim and his co-author explore how alternative sports celebrities, such as Tony Hawk, Shaun White and Kelly Slater, balance commercial success with preserving the authentic spirit of their sports through their social media platforms during the COVID-19 pandemic. A list of all topics and authors in the fresh edition of the encyclopedia can be found here.
Their inclusion in the Olympic Games has spurred a growing interest in action sports and their diverse local contexts. In the Journal of Sport in Society, Kim and his co-authors published their research on Exploring the Social Mediatization of Action Sports Communities in South Korea, with a specific focus on surfing and skateboarding. The paper examines the social media logic of programmability, popularity and connectivity that influence the social media use of actors in the Korean action sports communities.
