Anthony Chvala-Smith teaches seminary and undergraduate courses in theology, the Bible, and the History of Christian Thought.
He is passionate about social justice in all its dimensions: economic, gender, political, and environmental. Learning to listen with critical empathy to past prophets and practitioners of justice –Amos, Thomas Aquinas, Julian of Norwich, Frederick Douglass, Walter Rauschenbusch, Martin Luther King, Jr., Rosemary Radford Ruether, Oscar Romero, and others – can awaken and deepen this passion in our students.
As a farm kid and first-generation college student, the Liberal Arts awakened my critical intellect and imbued me with a deep sense of wonder. A university education infused with the Humanities taught me that the things that matter most in human life –justice, love, equity, compassion, inclusion, hope – demand fearless questioning and vigilant self-awareness.
